Angels represent higher sentient beings and are above man in Nature's hierarchy. He is given the unenviable task of being man's guardian. In the modern art, the tradition of using the angel's wings has continued, and in fact, you cannot find any angel without any pair of wings in them. Perhaps the artists just want to show the angel's special powers and have no way of depicting them but by the form of a human being.
Angels are messengers of God in the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament and the Quran. The term "angel" has also been expanded to various notions of "spiritual beings" found in many other religious traditions. Other roles of angels include protecting and guiding human beings, and carrying out God's tasks.
